Torano Nuovo

Torano Nuovo

Torano Nuovo is in the center of an uncontaminated Nature still provided of its times, able to generate unforgettable fruits through its soils and still capable of holding the idea of labor as a gift and able to transform the passion for the land in immutable love. The climate balances the soft and sapid influence of the sea together with the cold streams from the Gran Sasso Mountain, giving birth to a perfect condition that allows a slow and progressive ripening of the flavours and creating an ideal balance between sugars and acidity.

The clay and limestone soil hosts the roots, which go down for several meters, the soil also provides and feeds them with a specific minerality that allows the wine to have complexity and longevity. A combination of soil and climate factors: the location of the vineyards exposed to a large solar arc, the different temperature range between day and night that helps the filling sugars in the grapes and the constant wind prevents bacteria and diseases to develop – all this define Torano Nuovo a town from incredible vine vocation.

INDIGENOUS VARIETALS

Our wines’ sense of place is strongly tied to the genetic complexity of the vegetal material which populates our vineyards. Emidio planted his first vineyards with the old method of field grafting. This practice – long lost – is to plant the rootstock, leaving its root system dig deep in search for nourishments without worrying about the fruit. When ready, the plant is then grafted on the field, an operation that Emidio did himself after having selected and prepared every bud.

The buds came from an old plot that Emidio liked back then. The original bud heritage allowed to multiply genetic richness, preserving ancestral clones of Trebbiano and Montepulciano unique and different between them. This method guarantees a unique population in our vineyards, rarely replicable and a distinctive characteristic to our wines. Those parcels are today more than 50 years old and for us they are the source of our massal selection every time we replant.
The Pergola
The Pergola is to Casa Pepe as the Velvet is to the Montepulciano. It’s a symbol soaked in history and functionality that meant for the family a farming style and an aptitude to cultivation. The loyalty to the Pergola through the years is tied to the deep love that Emidio nourishes for it. The Pergola is like a solar panel to him: the greater sun exposure guarantees more photosynthesis so a ratio in favour of energy production and accumulation of reserves, keeping the evolution of the berries slow and gradual. The ripening of the Montepulciano under the shade of its leaves is the key to the elegance of its tannins; the pergola is the promise today, as an ancient visionary resolution facing today’s challenging climate.

Biodynamic Farming
Emidio never used any chemicals since the beginning, as his main focus was to have an alive soil in order to have alive wines. Biodynamic agriculture focuses on the life forces existing in Nature activated by the universe dynamic, the life (bios) is originated by the activity of those natural forces (dynamic). When the Pepe family approached biodynamic agriculture in 2005, reading books, listening lessons and studying the philosophy of Rudolph Steiner, Sofia Pepe realised that most practices biodynamic farming involved, were already old customs at casa Pepe. Emidio had always respected moon phases for every practices in the cellar
and in the vineyards, as well he always refused the use of any chemical products and focused all his work toward the achievement of an alive and structured soil. Today we use biodynamic preparations and cover crops to reactivate the microorganisms into the soil and enrich the substance of it. We leave the vegetation spontaneously grow, thus terroir can express fully in our wines. The resulting bio-diversity allows us to have a number of yeast families which will contribute to our spontaneous fermentations, bringing several flavour profiles which are unique and indissolubly tighten to the season.

Agricultural Organism

For more than 50 years we have been carrying out an agricultural project that tries to enrich our soils and we let ourselves be enriched in turn by the enormous vital energy that Nature propulses every day. We live as a responsibility the contribution to the biodiversity of our vineyards and the surrounding countryside. To ensure a substantial return of organic matter to our soils we have put in place a system of crop rotation of the parcels surrounding our vineyards. The idea is to feed diversity, host multiple crops every year, stimulate the proliferation of indigenous yeasts, inhabit a local fauna, feed you and us with foods that are healthy and part of an agriculture project that crosses the boundaries of production to imagine it a seed to the sky in a resonant universe.
